Come and visit us in the Dominican Republic. The Caribbean island Hispaniola,
which belongs to the Great Antilles, is divided into the Dominican Republic
and Haiti. Two thirds of the area are the Dominican Republic (48.734
km2, 8 million habitants ).In the north The island verges the Atlantic
ocean and in the south it borders the Caribbean. Eighty percent of the
island is mountainous with hills up to 3000 m. The highest mountain
reaches 3.175 m its Pico Duarte.Columbus discovered the island in 1492,
looking for a seaway to India. The settling of the vice king of Spain
made the island the center of the Spanish culture in America. In 1697
the island was shared between the french colony and the Spanish colony
of Santo Domingo. Since 1844 the Dominican Republic is independent.
When in 1492 Columbus, full of admiration discovered the beautiful silver
glowing sea at the north coast, he baptized the place Puerto Plata (silver
harbor). West of the town is the remainder of a fort built in 1540 Fort
San Felipe. Majestically rises the mountain of Isabel de Torres up to
800m. The sugarcane imported by Columbus in 1493 was planted first time
on the island in Puerto Plata. Nowadays we have wonderful Hotel resorts
and an eighteen hole golf course, the Robert Trent Jones course. Sosua:
The village is east of the International Airport 15 km and 25 of Puerto
Plata, it was founded in 1938 by 500 Jewish settlers.
The Dominican Republic (Spanish: República
Dominicana, Spanish pronunciation: [re'pußlika ðomini'kana])
is a nation located in the Caribbean region's island of Hispaniola.
Part of the Greater Antilles archipelago, Hispaniola lies west of Puerto
Rico and east of Cuba and Jamaica. Its western third is the nation of
Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are occupied
by two countries, Saint Martin being the other.
The Dominican Republic is the site of the first permanent
European settlement in the Americas, its capital Santo Domingo, which
was also the first colonial capital in the Americas. It is the site
of the first cathedral, university, European-built road, European-built
fortress, and more.
For most of its independent history, the nation experienced
political turmoil and unrest, suffering through many non-representative
and tyrannical governments. Since the death of military dictator Rafael
Leonidas Trujillo Molina in 1961, the Dominican Republic has moved toward
representative democracy.
In 1861, after silencing or exiling many of his opponents
and mainly due to political and economic reasons, Santana signed a pact
with the Spanish Crown and reverted the Dominican nation to a colonial
status, the only Latin American country to do so. Opponents launched
the War of the Restoration in 1863, led by a group of men including
Santiago Rodríguez and Benito Monción among others; General
Gregorio Luperón distinguished himself at the end of the war.
Haitian authorities, fearful of the re-establishment of Spain as colonial
power on their border, gave refuge and logistics to Dominican revolutionaries
to re-establish independence. The United States, then fighting its own
Civil War, vigorously protested the Spanish action. After two years
of fighting, the Spanish troops abandoned the island. The Restoration
was proclaimed on August 16, 1863.
